3 out of 5 stars Bill James Handbook   May 16, 2010
GAK (St Louis MO USA)
Bios of players with minor league records, achievements, awards, transactions, are not provided; Which I found disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference Work   April 5, 2010
Dan Canlon
The Handbook is not really intended for helping rotisserie league owner prepare for drafts, but it provides great backup material. James includes projections for the upcoming season, but acknowledges that they are less than 100% certain. But then again, what projection is 100% certain? There are the usual intriguing essays on baseball and past statistics for individual players. It's a great companion for the upcoming season.

2 out of 5 stars Bill James is Hot Air   March 22, 2010

Sadly, a few years back, The Sporting News stopped publishing The Baseball Register. The Baseball Register was the gold standard for meat-and-potatoes statistics in baseball- very easy to find information and formulate your own judgements.
Bill James has come along and supplied us with yearly and career records of players, but has added a lot of pompous self-proclaimed "meaningful data". All the additional stuff is absolute junk. It makes it difficult to navigate and find basic information that most fans want to see- fielding averages are not even given. He has a crew of buddies from throughout the country (they aren't representative of the whole country) rate players on defense. If you look at all his different tallies, you would think the World Champion Yankees were a clown team-no one in the infield is rated on the top 10 in fielding, other than Teixeira (4th). His plus/minus system is a subjective rating to determine the range and runs saved for fielding. Pujols is a consistant fielding winner. His 11 errors (significantly high for first base) are not important. Cano, Jeter, and Rodriguez - not even top 10- are you kidding?
Missing amongst all the drivel is the one stat I never see- what are the numbers with hitters when they swing at 3-0 count pitcher or 3-1 pitches? I always hear what a great advantage they have, but I never see the numbers to support the statement. Why not?
Get this book from Amazon for the basis data all fans like and the deep discount, but don't waste your time reading what James has to say. He knows no better than me or you.

5 out of 5 stars Bill James Handbook   March 17, 2010
Jordan A. Dykstra
A must-read for the diehard, number-crunching, baseball enthusiast. Great section of projected stats for pitchers and position players.

This was a Christmas present for my son. He was very excited to receive the book.
